World Cup Organisers Consider Extending Squad Deadline After Pressure From Eriksson, Van Basten & Others

World Cup organisers are considering extending the deadline for naming World Cup squads after several top international coaches pleaded for the deadline to be extended.

Currently, the 32 World Cup coaches must name their 23-man squads by May 15, but some managers want the deadline extended by up to two weeks.

The World Cup kicks-off on June 9 with the final a month later in Berlin.

Brazil coach Carlos Alberto Parreira said on Wednesday:"I will definitely name my final squad on May 15, but I support the idea of moving the deadline to the end of May or even the beginning of June,"

England coach Sven Goran Eriksson, Netherlands boss Marco van Basten and Gemany coach Jürgen Klinsmann are just three of the top managers to back the idea.

Coaches claim an extended deadline would help them weigh up late injuries to players, many of whom are likely to be playing in domestic cup competitions, and with the Champions League final on May 17, it is highly likely that an injury would occur to a World Cup player during that time.

The German Organising Committee, fronted by UEFA president Lennart Johansson, will meet in Zurich on March 15 to come to a decision.
