Wales 0-0 Paraguay - Paraguay Denied By Stunning Jones - Toshack's England Warning For World Cup After Ruiz's Paraguay Impress

Wales boss John Toshack has warned England they must not take Paraguay lightly when the sides meet at this summer's World Cup after his team managed to hold Paraguay to a 0-0 draw in their friendly international at the Millennium Stadium on Wednesday.

Coach Anibal Ruiz had hoped this trip to Cardiff would reveal some key points about the British game before their World Cup opener with England on June 10 but his side were frustrated by an inexperienced Wales side.

Wales and Manchester United winger Ryan Giggs tried an early long-range chip over Paraguay goalkeeper Justo Villar, who had deserted his goal line, but he scuffed his shot.

It was, however Wales’ veteran goalkeeper Paul Jones who managed to keep a clean sheet for the Welsh, with a string of fine saves.

With Ruiz looking to Werder Bremen striker Nelson Valdez to provide the goals in Germany should fellow striker Roque Santa Cruz not recover from injury, the 22-year-old found himself on the end of enough chances to open the scoring for the south American’s.

After 14 minutes a hopeful ball from defence saw Valdez avoid the offside trap but his neat half-volley was ably saved by the 38-year-old keeper Jones. Valdez then shot wide when the chance repeated itself two minutes later.

As Paraguay's possession took hold, Jones was called into action once more in the 24th minute to deny Valdez from close range, the Welshman saving brilliantly from the impressive Denis Caniza's follow-up.

Jones also reacted instinctively to keep out a volley from Reggina’s Carlos Paredes, before he was replaced for the final 25 minutes by Lewis Price.

The youngster also made a fantastic save to keep Wales on level terms. Veteran striker Jose Cardozo had bamboozled the Welsh defence with a mazy run but Price, who plays in the English second division with Ipswich Town, was smartly off his line to smother.

Paraguay, who have been drawn in Group B in the World Cup Finals, alongside England, Sweden and Trinidad and Tobago, and will be England's first group opponents at the Finals.

Wales Coach John Toshack said after the match: “The fact that Paraguay are England's first opponents in the finals could be significant.

“You never know what will happen in the first match of a tournament, and Paraguay could be a difficult game for England. They are technically very good and have players who can cause any team problems.

“There is no doubt Paraguay will be more than ready for the England game and although I think England have an excellent chance of doing well in the finals, they will have to be very aware of how dangerous Paraguay could be in that first match.”

Toshack also praised debutant Lewin Nyatanga after he became Wales' youngest ever full international.

The Derby starlet, at 17 years and 195 days, took the 'youngest ever' tag from Ryan Green, the former Wolves full-back now with Hereford.

Toshack said: "I was very pleased with him, he handled the occasion well and looked very comfortable out there.”

Paraguay boss Anibal Ruiz was reluctant to discuss his country's World Cup finals clash with England, but did say: “It was important that we did well in this match and learned about playing British-style sides.

“Wales' goalkeeper was outstanding, he made a lot of very good saves to stop us from winning.

“We need more games like this, the Wales match was the first of our World Cup build-up and we will be ready for out first match in Germany against England.

“But for now we will continue to build for the finals, and there is still plenty of time to get our team to the level we want.”
