Brazil captain Cafu needs surgery, and may miss the World Cup Finals, with Brazil coach Carlos Alberto Parreira now facing the prospect of going to World Cup Finals without the veteran ‘Seleção’ wide man.

The 35 year-old AC Milan star requires surgery for a lesion on his left knee, and it is possible that he may not recover in time, which could see him miss the trip to Germany this June.

Cafu, real name Marcos Evangelista de Moraes Cafu, has lifted the World Cup twice with Brazil, in 1994 and 2002, and is one of the mainstays of the Brazil team, with coach Parreira knowing of his importance on the pitch.

“If Cafu can’t come to the World Cup, it will be a huge loss for us,” Alberto Parreira told reporters.

“He is a leader on the pitch, for this reason he is our skipper.”

Cafu has amassed over 100 caps for Brazil, and during the last World Cup Cafu became the first footballer to play in the finals of three World Cup's.

Real Madrid right back Cicinho is likely to take Cafu’s place in the Brazilian lineup if the two-time World Cup champion is not available.
