US Squad For Copa America Finals 2007 - US Team Without Fulham's Bocanegra & Dempsey, PSV's Beasley & LA Galaxy's Donovan

The 22-man U.S. men's national soccer squad for the Copa America 2007 Finals in Venezuela has been named by U.S. head coach Bob Bradley, with a few big-name players missing from the national roster.

The Stars and Stripes will be without the experience of LA Galaxy striker Landon Donovan, PSV Eindhoven star DaMarcus Beasley, the Fulham FC duo of Clint Dempsey and Carlos Bocanegra or Standard Liege defender Oguchi Onyewu – who between them have earned over 260 international caps – in the South American tournament.

With the United States featuring in the CONCACAF Gold Cup against Mexico on Sunday and the U.S. to face Argentina, Colombia and Paraguay in the first round of the Copa America, qualification to the second round will be very hard for the inexperienced team.

The U.S. squad features only eight players from his current Gold Cup squad, but they do include veteran goalkeeper Kasey Keller, Jonathan Bornstein and New England Revolution forward Taylor Twellman.

Bradley has named three uncapped players — Colorado Rapids striker Herculez Gomez, Toronto FC goalkeeper Marvell Wynne and FC Dallas defender Drew Moor in the 22-man squad and sixteen of the named players have played 10 or fewer games for the U.S. national team.

Coach Bradley is seeing the tournament as a chance to give some of the up and coming young players some international experience.

“This group has many of the faces that could play a role in 2008 and 2009 when our focus turns to our ultimate goal of qualifying for the World Cup in South Africa,” said Bradley.

They include such players as Watford defender Jay DeMerit, midfielders Ricardo Clark from Houston Dynamo, Chicago Fire’s Justin Mapp, Hamburg SV’s Benny Feilhaber and Kansas City Wizards forward Eddie Johnson, all who are featuring in the CONCACAF Gold Cup.

Also headed for Venezuela are Chivas USA players Brad Guzan, who probably will split the goalkeeping with Keller, midfielder Sacha Kljestan and Bornstein. No Galaxy players are on the squad, but Bradley did recall former Galaxy defender Danny Califf, now with Aalborg BK in Denmark.
