U.S.A Face Guatemala In Friendly As Arena Decides On Squad for Finals - Josh Wolff & Brian Ching Will Take Chance To ShineSubmitted by Scott Harkness on Sun, 19/02/2006 - 13:11.
The U.S.A face Guatemala today in the fourth and final international friendly in the six week training camp that U.S coach Bruce Arena set-up to determine which players he will take to the World Cup Finals from the domestic league. U.S Striker Josh Wolff knows that scoring against Guatemala in their friendly encounter in Dallas later on today won't be enough to guarantee him a place in U.S coach Bruce Arena’s World Cup squad for the finals in Germany. With Bruce Arena using this series of friendlies to test out the players who play in the United States domestic leagues, many of the players who will line-up against Guatemala later on today will know that they have no chance of making it to the final squad. But in the three matches so far, Wolff has yet to hit the target for the U.S.A, and in today’s match he'd desperately like to score. “I’m not going to say it’s a do or die, but it’s important,” said Wolff. “You're a forward. That's what you get paid to do.” The match against Guatemala will the fourth international friendly recently for the Americans, who’s coach Bruce Arena is still deciding on who to take from the U.S domestic leagues for his 23-man World Cup squad before heading to Germany in June. The U.S team go into Sunday's game unbeaten, having drawn with neighbours Canada 0-0, and then going on to defeat Norway 5-0, and fellow World Cup qualifiers Japan 3-2. Arena still insists that no player has a guaranteed spot on the team, despite obvious choices like Fulham FC forward Brian McBride, and Borussia M'Gladbach goalkeeper Kasey Keller, who are among a handful of likely selections that are currently playing with their European clubs, and won't link up with the national team until next month. Also missing Sunday will be any players from the Major League Soccer Cup finalist’s - New England Revolution and Los Angeles Galaxy - including Taylor Twellman, who scored four goals in the last two friendlies against Norway and Japan. Eight players that were included in the previous friendlies were released back to the two teams participating in the MLS Cup final’s at the end of last week to give them time to prepare for the quarter-finals of the CONCACAF Champions Cup, which begin on Wednesday. Their absences mean that coach Arena’s team will be without several of their best-known players for the game against Guatemala. But for World Cup hopefuls like Josh Wolff and Houston MLS forward Brian Ching, this game could be their best chance yet to claim a spot in the U.S.A squad. “It’s a big opportunity for me because it’s a chance to show what I’ve got,” said Ching, who’s expected to earn his second cap against Guatemala. “It’s definitely important to show what I can do over 90 minutes, and try to make an impact.” Wolff, compared to some of the other players, is a veteran in the national team. The striker, who plays for the Kansas City Wizards, had two game-winning goals and an assist during the World Cup qualifying campaign in 2001. He also made two appearances for the U.S during the 2002 World Cup Finals. But injuries hampered the forward, most notably a torn cruciate ligament in 2003 that put him out of action for a long period. Now he has finally reached full fitness again, Wolff has said he’s pleased with how the six weeks of training camp in California has gone. “I’m not going to look at this as being the most critical game of my life, but it's important like the other ones were,” said Wolff. “Coach knows who I am, and what I bring. “At the end of the day, if I'm someone that he wants around, then that's what he chooses.” Ching, who plays for the Houston 1836, scored two goals in the CONCACAF zone World Cup qualifiers in 2004. Disappointed with his contributions as a substitute the past two games, Ching hopes a solid game against Guatemala will improve his chances. “A lot of forwards have been playing well so far,” Ching said. “But I’m still in there.” Guatemala captain Carlos Ruiz, who plays with FC Dallas, will also be playing at his home stadium to be joined on the opposing side by his former FC Dallas team-mate, U.S. forward Eddie Johnson, who transferred from Dallas to Kansas City earlier this week. in favorites | email this page
