Turkey Look For Win With All To Play For In Euro Zone Group 2Submitted by Scott Harkness on Wed, 07/09/2005 - 05:31.
European Zone Group 2: The Ukraine, who have already qualified for next Summer's World Cup finals, face Turkey later today in, what for Turkey could be a their make-or-break game. With only one game left for Turkey after this meeting, away to current third-from-bottom placed Albania on the 12th of October. Turkey, who are hoping to make second place in the group, and so a play-off place for a ticket for the World Cup Finals, will be hoping that both Greece and Denmark, who are both still in the running for the second-spot, will cancel each other out in their meeting in October to give them some breathing space. The Turks will be desperate for a result against the Ukraine, and with the Ukraine having already qualified for the finals, in the hope that the Group 2 leaders will 'take their foot off the pedal'. Greece, who are just two points behind Turkey, and with a game in hand, are, after their match with Kazakhstan, due to play both away to Denmark, and at home to Georgia in their hopes to qualify. The Greek side are due to play bottom-placed Kazakhstan later today, who, with ZERO points after nine qualifying matches, and only 4 goals scored, compared to 25 against, have become the unfortunate "Whipping boys" in the group. This should see the Greek team with an easy away-win. The problem for the Greek squad is the goal tally that the Turkish team has attained. With 21 goals scored, and only 9 against, a tally of +12, the Greek team, (+5 goals), will need to score profusely to be able to assure qualification should the Turk's get a result against the Ukraine. Denmark, in their home game today against Georgia, the team who almost scuppered the Ukraine's qualification celebrations last Saturday, with a last minute equaliser to draw 1-1 with the group winners, know that anything less than a win will consign them to the ranks of the "Nearly made it's", until the next time round. in favorites | email this page
