Tottenham Hotspur’s new Bulgarian striker Dimitar Berbatov has said that he will be happy if he manages to score 15 to 20 goals in his debut season in the Premiership with Spurs, having scored two goals in a pre-season friendly against Birmingham City.

The former CSKA Sofia and Bayer Leverkusen striker, who has earned 50 international caps and scored 31 times for Bulgaria, is excited about the coming season, even though the Premiership will be a new experience.

“It will be good if I can score 15 or even 20 goals next season,” said Berbatov, who joined Spurs from Bayer Leverkusen for £10.5 million (€16 million) in May, to Bulgarian radio Gong on Thursday.

Berbatov scored twice within two minutes of the first half of the friendly warm-up to give his new club a 2-0 victory over Birmingham City at St Andrew's on Saturday, with the attacking line-up including Berbatov, Jermain Defoe and Robbie Keane, as well as Spurs’ other new signing, Benoit Assou-Ekotto.

“I’ll be happy to score against Arsenal,” the 25-year-old added, showing how fast he was to understood the two North London clubs' fierce local rivalry.

“It’s not difficult to understand that they are our bitter rivals, everybody in the club is talking about it.”

Berbatov, who scored 69 goals in 154 matches during his five years in the German Bündesliga, said he already realised that the style of play in The Premiership is not the same as in Germany.

“Football is different there, I’ll have to adjust to the new style of play,” said Berbatov, who has scored 31 goals in 50 internationals for Bulgaria.

Berbatov has featured in Tottenham’s tour of France, which the Bulgarian took as a chance to adapting to the English game saying: “It was difficult during the first two pre-season matches but I received a welcome reception in the club and I don’t think I’ll have a problem to adapt.

“Little by little I’m coming into my best form. Everything is new for me, even the training sessions are different. But training is varied and it makes it pleasant.”
