Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 Orlando Pirates Full-Time Report - Darren Bent & Wayne Routledge Score In Pre-Season Friendly MatchSubmitted by Scott Harkness on Tue, 24/07/2007 - 21:36.
Tottenham Hotspur have beaten the Orlando Pirates 2-1 in their pre-season friendly in Cape Town, South Africa on Tuesday night. Darren Bent opened the scoreline for Spurs early in the first-half, with Wayne Routledge doubling the score late-on in the second-half, with Joseph Kamwendo scoring a consolation for the Orlando Pirates minutes later from the penalty-spot. Tottenham Boss Martin Jol started with Jermaine Defoe and Darren Bent in attack for Spurs, with Robbie Keane and Dimitar Berbatov remaining on the bench throughout the match. Spurs' new signing Darren Bent opened the scoring in the 12th minute, from a long-pass from Tom Huddlestone, bringing the ball down well and despatching an expertly guided controlled long-range lob over the Pirates keeper from the edge of the area to make it 1-0. Despite Spurs having the majority of possession, the Orlando Pirates almost equalised in the 25th minute when Lebohang Mokoena broke through the Spurs defence and had his first chance saved by Cerny, before shooting wide on his second chance. Tom Huddlestone had a shot go wide of the Pirates post as the half came to a close, with the half finishing 1-0 to Martin Jol's team, but with the Orlando Pirates looking like they were in with a chance of scoring in the second-half. The Orlando Pirates were the stronger team in the early stages of the second-half, but failed to capitalise on their breaks into the Spurs penalty-area, with Radek Cerny making some decent saves to deny the Pirates. As Tottenham began to find their flow again, with shots from Taarabt and Huddlestone, Wayne Routledge doubled the score-line in the 84th minute after a corner for the Orlando Pirates was defended well by Spurs and they played the ball out of danger, with the passing movement eventually finding Routledge, who controlled a cross well to shoot from just inside the penalty area to make it 2-0. Minutes later the Orlando Pirates were awarded a penalty. The first penalty-kick, which was saved by Cerny, had to be re-taken after the referee caught the Spurs keeper off his line, with the second kick this time seeing the linesman flagging the Czech keeper for the same offence, to force a third penalty kick. It was third-time lucky for Orlando Pirates as Joseph Kamwendo scored a consolation for his team late in the game to make it 2-1.
