Togo's Hawks Beat Ghana's Black Stars in Their First International Friendly Game of 2006 in TunisiaSubmitted by Pavlos Skoufis on Thu, 12/01/2006 - 20:31.
The Hawks had their first win of 2006 and were filled with confidence ahead of the African Cup of Nations. The friendly clash was Ghana's first loss in an international game since June 2004. Togo striker Adefanmi Olufade scored the only goal of the game in the 72nd minute. Coach Stephen Keshi laid out a strong midfield line which posed great difficulties for Ghana's game. Olufade went passed through three defenders and sent a powerful shot, leaving Ghana's goalkeeper helpless. Togo striker Emmanuel Adebayor left Monaco without notice according to his Club, and said that he hoped the team's management would understand that the World Cup is an important tournament for him. Monaco officials said that he will be training with the juniors for failing to notify them. Speaking to BBC Sport, he said that "They don't want me to play for my country, but I'm ready to die for my country." "My country is my country, and I'm going to play for them whether they like it or not," directly challenging Monaco's decision not to release the player. "I don't know how they can punish me, I love my country. There are so many clubs who want to sign me in England, in Spain and everywhere... So I'm going to think about what I should do and what's best for my career." "Since we qualified for the World Cup our heads have been a bit all over the place, but now we have calmed down and are concentrating more in training." "It was very important for us to beat the Black Stars to give us more confidence. We have a lot of work to do.We have to progress because we are small team... I can't say that we will win the Nations Cup, but we will do our best and see what happens." Ghana had been recently hit hard by injuries with the team's key midfielders left out of the squad through injury. Michael Essien, Sulley Ali Muntari and Asamoah Gyan were not included in the team. Red Star Belgrade’s Hamidu Dramani and Kingston were the two players who tried to create many chances by passing the ball to the forwards. John Mensah and Issah Ahmed were very busy defending Togo's attempts. Joetex Frimpong had a very good chance in the middle of the first half after winning the ball from Togo’s defender Eric Akoto, but his shot was saved by Togo's goalkeeper. The game was played in an empty stadium in Monastir, Tunisia, yesterday. Both teams have set training camps in the country before moving to Egypt for the African Cup of Nations. The player also said that despite Togo's win, a lot more work needs to be done. in favorites | email this page
