Togo have been beaten 2-0 by Switzerland in their Group G match in Dortmund on Monday after Alexander Frei opened the scoring in the 16th minute and Tranquillo Barnetta scored a late goal, with Arsenal’s Emmanuel Adebayour having a blatant penalty waved away by the referee in the first-half.

Both teams started brightly, with the Swiss having the majority of possession in the opening minutes, but the World Cup debutantes soon got into their stride.

Togo had the first real chance at goal, in the 6th minute, when Arsenal's Adebayour turned past his Arsenal team-mate Phillipe Senderos and tried a shot at goal, but it went straight to the keeper.

Alexander Frei had a header go straight to the Togo keeper Kofi Agassa, but made no mistake in the 16th minute when he tapped in a lovely cross.

Togo had a wonderful chance to equalise for Les Eperviers when, not for the first time, Phillipe Senderos made a defensive mistake missing his kick and allowing Thomas Dossevi a free shot on goal which went agonisingly wide at the half-hour mark.

Adebayor was then blatantly brought down in the penalty area by Patrick Mueller for what looked like a stonewall penalty, but Adebayor's tumble was so dramatic, the referee thought it was a dive and waved it away.

Togo were in the ascendancy now for the first time in the match, with Switzerland often pulling everyone back except for Frei, but Togo’s final shooting was well off target and never really troubled Zuberbuehler in the Swiss goal.

The game went into half-time with the Swiss still holding their slim lead, with the African's feeling that they should be level from the penalty-spot.

Daniel Gygax was replaced by Hakan Yakin at half-time and the talismanic Yakin almost doubled the score for Switzerland in the 53rd minute, but his shot flew high of the bar.

Moustafa Salifou tried a shot from distance for Togo, but the main thrust of play was coming from Switzerland and Kossi Agassa was tested on a couple of occasions, being forced into an acrobatic save to tip over Tranquillo Barnetta's fierce strike and having to be quick to deny Hakan Yakin a shot on target.

Togo seemed to have no ideas in attack and looked a shadow of the team that knocked Senegal out of the qualification for the World Cup Finals last year.

Dossevi was subbed for Junior Senaya in the 68th minute and senaya immediately injected some life into the Eperviers attack, but still the final passing was awry.

With just ten minutes to go, Switzerland seemed quite content to sit on their goal advantage knowing that Togo would be pushing for an equaliser.

But their World Cup dreams were in tatters when Tranquillo Barnetta sealed the victory for the Swiss with just 2 minutes of normal play to go with Switzerland going on the break, finishing with a lovely long-range strike from Barnetta that flew past Agassa and in off the far-post to make it 2-0 to Switzerland.

A late save from Zuberbuehler denied Togo a late goal, but it was too little, too late for the Togolese.

The game finished 2-0 with Togo left with no chance of making the last sixteen and are now left with a game against France to save some pride.
