Arsenal's Theo Walcott Still In Shock About England Squad Call - Video Footage Shows TalentSubmitted by Scott Harkness on Mon, 08/05/2006 - 20:28.
Arsenal striker Theo Walcott is still in shock over his surprise call-up to England's World Cup Final squad, only having found out the news after he had sat the theory part of his driving test today. His agent Colin Gordon has revealed that it was Walcott’s father who revealed to the 17-year-old ex-Southampton striker that he was included. “He didn't find out very quickly he was doing the theory test for his driving examine, and his Dad was waiting for him - and he told him the great news,” Gordon told Sky Sports News. “His Dad got a phone call from the FA and he then heard it on the radio whilst he was waiting. “Theo was in complete shock and still is, he was only expecting one good result, with his driving test, but he got two as he passed that also.” “Everyone was hoping for that [stand-by place] and we are all really in shock and the phone hasn't stopped ringing,” he said. Walcott was apparently oblivious that The Football Association were keeping tabs on him, let alone including him in the squad. “He had an idea, but Ashley Cole and Sol Campbell were coming back from injury so to see FA staff at the training ground was not unusual,” he continued. “But he will cope with it and has been training with world class players and it won't go to his head. “I think he will back his own ability but he is there to learn and whatever experience he gets will be invaluable. “He has been picked and his job is to do his best from now on,” finished his agent. The 17-year-old former Southampton player is a surprise call-up considering he has never played a Premiership match, but the youngster has impressed Eriksson enough to put his neck on the line for the talent that Walcott possesses and could be turn out to be England's secret weapon for The Three Lions at Germany 2006.
