Switzerland have beaten South Korea 2-0 in their decisive World Cup Group G match in Hanover on Friday evening, with the result in the other match meaning Korea are out of the World Cup Finals.

Arsenal’s Philippe Senderos headed the opening goal for the Swiss in the 23rd minute, with Alexander Frei doubling the lead in the 77th minute.

The game started off at a good pace, with both sides creating chances, but never really testing either keeper.

The deadlock was broken by Philippe Senderos with a great header from an equally good cross from Hakan Yakin to make it 1-0 to Switzerland, with Senderos getting injured in the process.

Alexander Frei had a great chance to double the lead minutes later, with Manchester United’s Park Ji Sung having an attempt at the other end as Korea pushed for an equaliser.

Hakan Yakin had a couple of shots test the Korean keeper Lee Woon Jae as the first-half came to a close, with Kim Jin Kyu failing to latch on to a header and achance for Korea going begging with no-one to latch onto a loose ball that crossed in front of the Swiss goal.

The game went into half-time with Switzerland in the lead, but with the half-time score 0-0 in the other match, both teams still going through.

Switzerland came out for the second-half the stronger team, with Alexander Frei and Rafael Wicky coming close.

Korea then, receiving the news that France were 2-0 up and that a draw was not enough, started to have a few attempts of their own with Cho Jae Jin having a couple of shots which forced the Swiss keeper Zuberbuehle into a couple of good saves.

Switzerland doubled their lead in the 77th minute, with Alexander Frei getting clear of the Korean defence and beating the keeper, with Korea’s claims of offside being waved away by the referee.

South Korea weren’t beaten yet and came agonisingly close when Kim Jin Kyu hit the bar in the 83rd minute but the Swiss held on for their win.

Korea are now out of the World Cup after France beat Togo 2-0 in the other Group G match in Cologne, but gave a great display from both the players, but more especially the fans, who were amazing in their support.

Switzerland progress a group winner and face Ukraine in the first knockout stages.
