Sweden's Freddie Ljungberg Forced To Retire From Arsenal's Match Against Liverpool With Recurrence Of Calf Strain

Sweden and Arsenal midfielder Freddie Ljungberg has had a recurrence of his calf muscle injury during Arsenal's Premiership match against Liverpool at Highbury today.

He was forced off the pitch after only fifteen minutes of the match, to be substituted by France's Robert Pires.

The midfielder, who scored five goals in World Cup qualification for Sweden, has failed to score so far this season, has been out of action with the calf injury, having missed Sweden's World Cup warm-up match against Ireland at Lansdowne Rd at the beginning of the month.

Sweden do not have any further friendly matches scheduled prior to Swedish coach Lars Lagerback naming the squad in May.

It may now mean, if the injury does not show signs of healing, that Ljungberg could miss out on being named in Lagerback's squad for the finals in Germany, which kick-off on June 9.

Sweden have been drawn in Group B in the World Cup Finals alongside England, Paraguay and Trinidad and Tobago.
