Sweden Disappoint In 1-1 Draw With Chile

Sweden completed their preparations for World Cup 2006 with an unconvincing 1-1 draw against Chile at the Rasunda Stadion, Stockholm, on Friday. Ex-Barcelona front man Henrik Larsson fired the home side into the lead after 32 minutes with a brilliantly converted free kick. However, the Swedes were punished after a sluggish start to the second half when Humberto Suazo equalised in the 51st minute, after being put through by Jorge Valdiva.

Sweden could have been punished further in a second half in which Chile dominated much of the play. But for wayward finishing the South Americans may have finished the game victorious. As it was, Sweden survived, but there must be concerns about their potency up front. Even with the likes of Larsson and Juventus’ Zlatan Ibrahimovic leading the attack, goal-scoring opportunities were few and far between.

Sweden are in Group B with England, Paraguay and Trinidad & Tobago. Their first match is against Trinidad and Tobago on June 10.
