Sven Wanted By South Africa To Lead Bafana Bafana To 2010 World Cup Finals SuccessSubmitted by Scott Harkness on Wed, 22/03/2006 - 00:49.
England head coach Sven-Goran Eriksson is being targeted by South Africa to coach the national side when he leaves his England managerial post after the World Cup Finals in Germany. The South African 2010 chief executive Danny Jordaan believes the Swede would be the ideal head coach for South Africa as they look to build the 'Bafana Bafana' team in time for when they host the next World Cup Finals in 2010. Jordaan told BBC Sport: “Sven has overseen the emergence of young players and that sort of attitude would be important when building a new team for South Africa. “England have moved away from the idea that if David Beckham isn't available or Paul Scholes retires then the team is in trouble. There's more depth and balance to the England team – whatever is said about Eriksson, young players now have a permanent place in the squad and that sort of attitude would be important when building a new team for South Africa.” South Africa had a catastrophic African Nations Cup in January, losing all three of their group matches, and since have parted company with interim coach Ted Dumitru. “Our performance in Egypt was miserable. We now need a strong plan and a coach who's been to the World Cup and understands the dynamics of the tournament,” Jordaan added. “He must also start in 2006 to give him time to oversee the technical development of our football over the next four years.” in favorites | email this page
