Stuart Pearce Thinks FA Should Decide On Eriksson's England Successor Before Finals

Former England left-back and Manchester City manager Stuart Pearce has told the Football Association to appoint a successor to Sven Goran Eriksson as England manager before the World Cup Finals start in June.

Speculation has been rife about who will take over from Sven-Goran Eriksson when the Swede steps down after the tournament in Germany, with Pearce one of the names being touted as a possible successor to Eriksson.

However, the City boss has already said he is not ready for the job, but insists that the new England manager must be in place before the World Cup starts in June, so the team can concentrate on the football.

“It is important for England that this is resolved before the tournament starts, by maybe a month,” said Pearce.

“Once we know who the man is we can concentrate properly on the World Cup itself.”

Former Celtic manager Martin O'Neill and Guus Hiddink who currently coaches both Australia and PSV Eindhoven are currently seen as the favourites for the job, but recent comments from Premier League chairman Dave Richards have suggested that the FA will go for a British-born manager.

For Pearce, who is seen by many as a potential England manager of the future, it doesn't matter who gets the job but the situation must be resolved.

The former England defender also believes the new boss shouldn't travel with the team to Germany, as it may upset the balance of the team.

“Naming the new man would be a help to Sven, and it would enable him to get on with the job in Germany without all the distraction of the speculation,” said Pearce.

“I don't think there is any need for the new man to go to Germany as it wouldn't help Sven if he were there.”
