Spurs Striker Jermain Defoe Stays Committed To Tottenham Despite Fears Of England World Cup Place Being AffectedSubmitted by Scott Harkness on Fri, 07/04/2006 - 18:07.
England striker Jermain Defoe has insisted that he remains committed to Tottenham Hotspur despite his worries about earning a World Cup place. The 23-year-old has not been able to keep his place in Spurs' starting line-up consistently this season and was again left on the bench by Spurs boss Martin Jol for the loss against Newcastle last Saturday. But, even though the striker has been touted with a move to Premiership rivals Liverpool, Defoe insisted he remains committed to Spurs. "I'm happy here, there's a great bunch of lads, the fans have been tremendous all year," Defoe said. "I think we've achieved something special this season so I can't see why I would think about going somewhere else." Defoe has scored eight goals this season but admits that his place on Sven-Goran Eriksson's squad for Germany could be under threat if he does not get more first team action. "People said to me 'you're not playing, are you worried?'. Of course you're going to be worried because there are other great strikers in the country, English strikers who are playing and scoring goals," he told Sky Sports News. "I just want to be the same, I want to play and score goals. I believe if I play I will score goals, so we'll see what happens." Defoe said he was focusing on his side's bid to hold their fourth in the Premiership to earn a place in the Champions League qualifiers ahead of Arsenal, Blackburn and Bolton. "What we've been talking about is positive - the Champions League," Defoe added. "We've been quite consistent this season the team spirit is good and everybody believes we can stay there. "It's something you try not to think about, you try to be positive and think that we have done so well until now, hopefully if we keep it going it will happen. "If it doesn't happen then it would be a heartbreak because as a team and squad we have achieved so much. "We have moved up that extra level and with all the young lads it would be great for all of us." in favorites | email this page
