Spurs' Dawson Named As Replacement For Charlton's Young In England World Cup Standby SquadSubmitted by Scott Harkness on Mon, 22/05/2006 - 02:04.
Tottenham Hotspur defender Michael Dawson has been called into England's World Cup squad as a standby replacement for Charlton Athletic’s Luke Young. The 22-year-old former Nottingham Forest defender will replace Charlton's Luke Young in the England standby squad, who was forced to withdraw from the reckoning after, in training, he aggravated an ankle injury he originally sustained in The Premiership on April 2, against West Ham United. Dawson, who is so far uncapped for the England senior squad, has been a regular choice at Under-21 level, and has been on stunning form this season and helped Spurs to fifth position in the Premiership and a place in next season's UEFA Cup. One player that wasn’t named in the original squad was Tottenham’s Ledley King, who is now back to match-fitness and, even though he was sure to have been considered by Eriksson when he was deciding on who to name as Young’s replacement, his fellow Spurs team-mate has been given the nod. It is the first time Sven-Goran Eriksson has selected the former Nottingham Forest defender, but he has been a regular choice at Under-21 level for the Three Lions. Dawson will join his new fellow international team-mate’s when they meet up in Watford on Monday after they return from their training camp in Portugal. in favorites | email this page
