Melendez Names Spain U-20 World Cup 2007 Squad - Ex-Liverpool's Barragan Joins Real's Mata & Bueno With Seville FC's Diego CapelSubmitted by Scott Harkness on Sun, 01/07/2007 - 18:43.
(Corrected) - Under-20 Furia Roja head coach Ginés Meléndez has named his 21-man Spain squad for the Under-20 World Cup Finals 2007, Canada. Spain, one of the favourites to lift the Under-20 World Cup, booked their place at the FIFA U-20 World Cup by winning the UEFA European Under-19 Championship in Poland in June 2006. Spain won the tournament without losing a single game, scoring an impressive 17 goals in the process, and Meléndez's youth side smashed the opposition in every match by playing by far the best football of the youth competition last year. Former Liverpool defender Antonio Barragan, who now plays with Deportivo de La Coruña, will be joining Real Zaragoza’s Gerard Piqué and Barcelona's Mark Valiente in defence. Real Madrid midfielder Juan Manuel Mata and strikers Alberto Bueno and Seville FC’s Diego Capel are players to watch, with Atlético midfielder Mario Suárez also making a name for himself. Spain have been drawn in Group B, alongside Uruguay, Zambia and Jordan.
