Spain Striker Fernando Morientes To Stay At Liverpool FC Despite Links To La Liga Side EspanyolSubmitted by Scott Harkness on Wed, 25/01/2006 - 17:56.
Spain and Liverpool FC striker Fernando Morientes has quashed rumours linking him with a move to Spanish La Liga side Espanyol, insisting he is happy at Liverpool, and is hoping to prove his worth to the Liverpool fans, and ensure himself a place in the Spain squad for the World Cup Finals. The Spanish striker has had some disappointing performances at Anfield since his £6.3m move from Real Madrid a year ago, and has managed to score just six times in his 28 English Premiership appearances. However, despite the goal drought, the 29-year-old retains the full backing of Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez, and is confident he will make a success of his Liverpool career. “I want to stay at Liverpool for a long time because the fans are yet to see the best of me,” Morientes told the Liverpool FC official website, “their support means so much to me, and I want to repay them for the faith they have shown in me.” Morientes will be more eager than ever to come back into form, with the prospect of a place in Luis Aragones’ squad in the World Cup Finals in Germany a real possibility, having already played a major part in ‘La Furia Roja’s’ qualification campaign, scoring 4 goals for Aragones’ team, and having bagged a further 6 goals for Spain in international friendlies. Morientes feels that he is now settled, and ready to properly show off his talents in the English Premiership saying, “I am really enjoying it at Liverpool now. For me to be here is a very good thing.” “The first three months were difficult as my English was very bad, and I was struggling for fitness having not played much for Real prior to my move.” “Now it's improving, and my life in Liverpool is good. My family is very happy here too and my children speak English.” “After playing for so long in La Liga it was a struggle adapting to life in the Premiership at first. The style is very different. It's a lot stronger over here, but now I prefer the Premiership to La Liga.” in favorites | email this page
