Spain and Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso may be unfit to play in Spain’s World Cup warm-up friendly against the Ivory Coast on Wednesday after receiving a head injury during Liverpool’s match against Manchester City on Sunday.

Alonso, plus three other players from the Liverpool team - Fernando Morientes, hat-trick hero Luis Garcia, and goalkeeper Pepe Reina - was chosen to join Spain’s 'Furia Roja' squad for the friendly by Spain coach Luis Aragones.

But the Spanish midfielder was caught in a head-clash with Manchester City’s Joey Barton, and had to receive treatment after receiving a head-wound that needed ten staples.

Alonso came back on after receiving treatment, but needed to be substituted by Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez just minutes later.
