Spain 2-1 Croatia - Atletico Madrid's Torres & Getafe Debutante Mariano Pernia On TargetSubmitted by Scott Harkness on Thu, 08/06/2006 - 04:01.
Spain’s La Furia Roja have scraped a 2-1 victory over fellow World Cup finalists Croatia in their final warm-up match in the Stade de Geneve on Wednesday. A free kick by former standby defender Mariano Pernia, along with an injury-time goal from Atlético Madrid striker Fernando Torres earned a win for Luis Aragones’ side. Spain went behind to Croatia when centre back Atlético defender Pablo Ibanez nodded the ball into his own net in the 14th minute. Getafe’s Pernia, called up to the squad as a replacement for Chelsea's injured defender Asier del Horno, equalised on 62 minutes when his miscued free kick went through a mass of defenders, only to creep in at the far post. Croatia keeper Stipe Pletikosa saved a penalty from Torres 15 minutes before time, before saving his blushes with a fine individual goal in stoppage time to allow Spain to stretch their unbeaten record to 22 consecutive matches against a strong Croatian side. “I'm pleased with the way we came back from the two setbacks of the own goal and the missed penalty,” Aragones told reporters. “These are the sort of things that can happen in the World Cup and it shows the team is convinced it can win.” in favorites | email this page
