Sol Campbell To Step In For England After Fine Arsenal Displays.Submitted by Chris Newton on Fri, 07/10/2005 - 21:53.
Sven Goran Eriksson refused to be drawn today, when quizzed about his line up for England's Group 6 Europe Zone World Cup Qualifier against Austria. There were quite a few questions for the England manager to answer on his team selection for the crunch match, and Mr. Eriksson skillfully answered none of them. Among the questions not answered was, who would partner John Terry at the heart of England’s defence? Throughout the day rumours have abounded as to who it might be, one of Sol Cambell, and Manchester United's Rio Ferdinand being the two in question, and it’s now believed that Sol will get the nod, due to recent great displays for Arsenal. Mr Eriksson also played down suggestions that the recent defeat to Northern Ireland had changed him as a manager, and wouldn’t confirm any other team selections, including who would partner Michael Owen up front, or who would play in the full back positions. Liverpool’s Peter Crouch is likely to start the game, after linking well with Owen when he partnered him against Columbia on England’s American tour, while his Liverpool Team mate Jamie Carragher will probably play at left back, with Charlton Athletic’s Luke Young on the Right. What seems assured is that England will revert to 4-4-2, as the experiments with the formation come to an end. Mr Eriksson today said that it was “Unacceptable for England not to qualify for the World Cup Finals”, and appears to be reverting to a more tried and tested system for Saturdays match.
