Socceroos Coach Guus Hiddink Hints That Australia Has Not Qualified By MistakeSubmitted by Pavlos Skoufis on Fri, 09/12/2005 - 18:25.
Coach Guus Hiddink and Football Federation Australia chief John O'Neill hinted that the Aussies will not be an easy team to beat in the World Cup 2006 Finals, as was suggested by USA coach Bruce Arena. O'Neill argued Arena's comment that Australia is a weak opponent by referring journalists to England's coach Sven-Goran Eriksson comment about Australia being a team to avoid. "England coach Sven Goran Eriksson did an interview and nominated Australia as a team to fear. That's very complimentary but we're simply saying that we're not here to make up the numbers, we'll be very competitive and difficult to beat – no bigger promises than that." "We're still pinching ourselves that we're here. November 16 wasn't that long ago. To be here at the draw, it's really sunk in that we've made it, that we're at the big table of the world game. Once the draw is known we can finalise our match arrangements for the rest of the year. It's a big logistical exercise, with Asian Cup qualifiers to arrange, friendlies, plus accommodation here in Germany." "We haven't been at this theatre for a long time but we've shown a lot of courage, been coached superbly, and our players are really looking forward to it," he said. Guus Hiddink reiterated O'Neill's statements; "The players will show the world that they're not here by accident. It's what I demand from them, to be competitive, and then you never know what you can achieve." "I think the world will look to a strong Australian team. As we improve step by step, this is the ideal stage to make that next step. I'm very happy and proud for the Australian people and the players who made it possible. I think this team has shown it can be competitive – sometimes you can make things happen, which we did." in favorites | email this page
