Slovakia have taken a giant step towards their first FIFA World Cup Finals following a 0-0 draw against Russia in Bratislava. With runaway winners Portugal having already secured top spot, the Slovaks new that a point would be enough for them to secure second place, and another chance in the play-offs.

A sluggish Russian side were lucky to go in level at half time following a number of chances for the home side, most notable of which being a shot from Ivan Hodur that came back off a post. They showed greater willing in the second half but the goal that they required remained elusive, and Slovakia finished the game the stronger with Vittek and Holosko missing good chances.

The result means Russia finish in a disappointing third place, on the same 23 points as Slovakia, but beaten on goal difference. They will miss the World Cup Finals for the second time in three attempts, and questions are likely to be asked at the highest levels.
Slovakia meanwhile can look forward to a head-to-head with one of the other European also-rans, and a tilt at the biggest prize of them all.
