The 26-year old Atletico Madrid striker will be out of action until at least mid-January after suffering from a torn cartilage in his right knee, his club announced today. Serbia and Montenegro's top scorer will miss part of his national team's training session as a result.

Mateja Kezman's injury was sustained on a Spanish League match against Alaves. Kezman had problems with his knee even before the match, however his manager took the risk and started the game with him.

"Although it is never good to collect an injury, this is a good time to be injured, over the holidays. I am sure I will be back playing again very soon," Kezman told reporters.

On Friday he will undergo a surgery operation and there is speculation that the former Chelsea FC & PSV Eindhoven striker will be returning to action at the end of January.
