Serbia and Montenegro and Lecce striker Mirko Vucinic has been ruled out of the World Cup after picking up a knee injury this week.

Vucinic, who plays for recently relegated Italian Serie A side Lecce, suffered the injury to his knee while playing for the Under-21 team against Germany, and medics have ruled that he would be unable to play any part in the World Cup Finals in Germany.

Serbia head coach Ilija Petkovic revealed: “We need a bit of time and we will name a replacement for Vucinic in the next few days.

“We will call up a player we need as we have five fit strikers at the moment.”

Petkovic will now be concentrating on his teams preparations for their international friendly against Uruguay, and the up-coming World Cup Finals.

The Serbian coach is looking forward to the Uruguay match saying: “This will be an excellent opportunity for us to get a picture of South American football.

“It will be a tough match because they are a skilful team.”

Serbia and Montenegro have been drawn in Group C in the World Cup Finals, alongside Argentina, Ivory Coast and the Netherlands.
