Serbia and Montenegro International Striker Nikola Zigic's Transfer to West-Ham United Put On-Hold Until Summer 2006

Red Star Belgrade officials admitted there was an offer up for Zigic from English Premiership Club West-Ham, but dismissed reports claiming he will move anywhere in January.

The 24-year-old striker has had an impressive performance this season with 8 goals in the Serbia and Montenegro First League, and another 6 goals in the UEFA Cup competition. He also scored 3 goals for the Serbia and Montenegro national football team in the World Cup Qualifiers, and is in Coach Petkovic’s plans for the World Cup Finals in Germany.

Red Star Belgrade has only league matches to play this season, but as the club wants to guarantee it’s participation in next season’s European tournaments, his move is highly unlikely. Red Star director of sport Stevan Stojanovic confirmed the offer from the East London club.

"Yesterday we returned from Paris, where we held a meeting with some of the clubs interested in Zigic. West Ham is one of them," said Stojanovic.

"But, we postponed all talks until the summer as we need our main striker for domestic competitions."

The Serbia and Montenegro international was recently voted as the best Serbian footballer of the year. The player confirmed he also travelled with his team’s officials to Paris for talks with Clubs interested in signing the international striker, saying that "It's true that I was in Paris because of transfer talks."

Press reports also link him to a possible move to Bundesliga, with Hamburg becoming increasingly interested in signing him up.

"But, even if the talks were quite open, I'll stay in Red Star until June. That's the wish of my club and my wish too although I'm flattered that West Ham wanted me, just like some other clubs from England too."
