Scotland Beaten By Switzerland 3-1 At Hampden Park As Switzerland Prepare For World Cup FinalsSubmitted by Thomas Balogh on Wed, 01/03/2006 - 23:32.
Switzerland have beaten Scotland 3-1 at Hampden Park to show their World Cup pedigree. Walter Smith will now have a better idea of what he needs to do to get Scotland to qualify for the European Cup in 2008. Switzerland have the World Cup to look forward to, Scotland have the daunting task of qualifying for the 2008 Euro championship. But with Walter Smith at the helm the mood is optimistic in the Scottish camp. Switzerland showed a bit of a cutting egde but the 3-1 score did not flatter Scotland who played well thoughout the game. McFadden delivered an excellent free kick early on, but just hit the outside netting. Ferguson linked up well with Miller. Tranquillo Barnetta opened the scoring with a fine volley, and then crossed for Daniel Gygax to double the visitors advantage. Kenny Miller pulled a goal back for the hosts, but Ricardo Cabanas sealed victory for the Swiss with an excellent finish. Fletchers corner wasn't accurate enough to threaten the Swiss goal and Kenny Miller was unable to get another. Gygax latched on to a great cross from the Swiss right wing and headed the ball in just before the half time break. Early in the second half Fletchers free kicks looked dangerous, but the Swiss defence led by Arsenal's Philipe Senderos were inpenetrable. Then Miller on 55 mins ran on to a lovely through ball, finding him just onside and putting past the keeper to get Scotland back into the game. Fletcher delivered another dangerous free kick that Caldwell nearly converted. For a while Scotland played very well but then Caldwell was caught on the back foot to let in Switzerland's third. Miller had another chance to guide the ball into the net but again failed to convert the opportunity. Scotland's defence were not flattered by this result, and were a bit unlucky with the linesman's decision for the third goal, when it looked off-side. However, Scotland are now in a much more positive position than they were a couple of years ago and will relish the chance to qualify for the European Championship. in favorites | email this page
