Manchester United issued a statement regarding Wayne Rooney's injury on Saturday evening on their offical website.

The brief statement read as follows: "Wayne Rooney has a fracture of the base of the fourth metatarsal on his right foot.

"He will be out for six weeks."

This means that Rooney is likely to miss England's first Group match, against Paraguay on June 10, but Rooney will, no doubt, be called on by Sven Goran Eriksson to join the England squad, irrespective of his early fitness.

Wayne Rooney was stretchered-off in Saturday’s Premiership match between Chelsea and Manchester United after badly injuring his foot.

The 20-year-old striker, who was expected to lead England’s attack during the World Cup this summer, appeared to pick up a foot injury after a tackle by Chelsea full-back Paulo Ferreira and was stretchered off in the 82nd minute of the match.

He was later seen boarding the Manchester United team coach with his foot heavily strapped and using crutches.

Thed loss of the talismanic young striker is a major blow for Sven Goran Eriksson’s England, who also missed the presence of Rooney in Euro 2004 quarter-final against Portugal, which severely affected England’s chances of victory.
