Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney flew back to Manchester on Wednesday for the scan that will determine whether he, or Spurs' Jermain Defoe will play any part in the World Cup Finals in Germany. (continued below)

The 20-year-old striker Manchester United striker flew by private jet from the England team camp in Baden Baden, Germany for a new CT scan on the broken metatarsal bone in his right foot.

Rooney was accompanied by the England team doctor Leif Sward, and Football Association executive director David Davies on the flight.

Manchester United team doctor Tony Gill and physiotherapist Rob Swire joined Rooney at the Whalley Range clinic in Manchester.

England have until Friday to decide if Rooney should re-join the England squad, or be replaced by Tottenham Hotspur striker Jermain Defoe who is on stand-by.

The results of the scan are expected to be made known later today, but may not be known until Thursday, leaving both players sweating over the outcome.

Rooney broke his metatarsal during Manchester United's Premiership match against Chelsea on April 29.

England head coach Sven-Goran Eriksson has had faith in Rooney’s ability to recover in time to play some part in the Finals in Germany right from the beginning, and Rooney's brief appearance on the England training pitch on Tuesday has lifted hopes that he may soon be back in contention for England.

"I'm confident he will take part in the World Cup and he is 300 percent confident that he will play,'' Eriksson said.

England is hoping that even if he misses all three Group B games – On Saturday against Paraguay, Trinidad and Tobago on June 15 and Sweden June 20 - he'll be available for future rounds - should England, as expected, advance.
