The US national head coach Thomas Rongen has named his 21-man squad for the Under-20 World Cup Finals 2007 in Canada. Bolton Wanderers forward Johann Smith, who plays his club football in the English Premiership, has been forced out of the squad with a hip injury, with Hamburger SV striker Preston Zimmerman coming in as his replacement. Also in attack will be Gabriel Ferrari who plays for Italian Serie A side Sampdoria and who has scored twice in his three appearances for his country. They will be joined in attack by two U.S. based players, Josmer Altidore from Red Bull New York and Andre Akpan from Harvard University. The U.S. skipper, 18-year-old Freddy Adu, who plays for MLS side Real Salt Lake in the MLS, remains the key player for the Stars and Stripes in the tournament. The speedy attacking midfielder, who has trained at Premiership champions Manchester United and heavily praised by their boss Sir Alex Ferguson, is in his third Under-20 World Cup Finals. He will be partnered by Heerenveen midfielder Michael Bradley, the duo are expected to set the pace for Dutchman Rongen’s young side.
