The Republic of Ireland's new captain Robbie Keane has signed a new four-year contract with his club side Tottenham Hotspur, the Premier League club said in a statement on Friday.

Keane made his debut as Ireland captain in the Republic's friendly match against Sweden last Wednesday, in Steve Staunton's first match as Ireland Head Coach.

"It is something that has been going on for a while, I am just happy it is now signed and I can look forward to a good future with Tottenham," said Keane today.

Keane has had an excellent week, the Spurs striker celebrated becoming Ireland skipper with a goal in his country's 3-0 friendly win over Sweden, who are grouped with England in this summers World Cup Finals.
