The German 2006 FIFA World Cup Organising Committee announced today the completion of the renovation works in Stuttgart's Gottlieb Daimler Stadion, one of the stadiums that will host some games in the Germany World Cup Finals.

The organisers held an open day yesterday to celebrate the completion and were expecting about 20,000 people to show up. However, they couldn't predict that a crowd of 100,000 would show up. The stadium features Europe's biggest Video Wall, according to the organisers, which is 230 square meters.

The stadium is the fourth largest in the list of World Cup Stadiums and will host 4 Group matches, a round of 16 match and the semi-final.

"We have a safe stadium which fulfils all necessary building and safety criteria," said the Mayor of Stuttgart Wolfgang Schuster, trying to dismiss the consumer product testing foundation Stiftung Warentest report, which criticised the escape exits and emergency lanes in certain stadiums that will host this summer's World Cup Finals.

Baden Wurttemberg’s Prime Minister Günther Oettinger and the organising committee's senior vice-president Horst R. Schmidt were the main guests of the ceremony.
