Chelsea defender Ricardo Carvalho and Olympique Lyon midfielder Tiago Mendes have both pulled out of Luiz Felipe Scolari's Portugal squad for Wednesday's friendly match against fellow World Cup finalists Saudi Arabia.

Mendes injured his right ankle in Olympique Lyon's 4-1 loss to Stade Rennes in le Championnat on Saturday.

Ricardo Carvalho did not feature in Chelsea's 2-0 victory over Portsmouth in the Premier League on Saturday because of a left thigh injury.

Fellow Chelsea defender Paulo Ferreira has been called up by Scolari to replace his team mate, Portugal's Football Federation said on Monday.

Portugal meet Angola, Mexico and Iran in Group D at the World Cup finals in Germany starting on June 9.

Saudi Arabia have been drawn in Group H with Spain, Ukraine and Tunisia.
