Portugal & Benfica Midfielder Simao Injured - Liverpool & Chelsea Target May Miss World CupSubmitted by Scott Harkness on Thu, 27/04/2006 - 16:36.
Portugal and Benfica midfielder Simão Sabrosa has given national coach Luiz Felipe Scolari a World Cup worry after picking-up an injury. The Benfica captain, who is said to be a summer target for both Liverpool and Chelsea, has strained his knee ligaments and looks likely to miss the rest of the Portuguese league season, putting his World Cup chances at threat. The former Barcelona attacking midfielder has strained knee ligaments and is anxiously waiting on the results of tests to ascertain the full extent of the injury. He is understood to have damaged both the lateral and cartilage ligaments in his left knee and now looks very likely to miss Benfica's final two games of the Portuguese season. The injury has prevented him from training properly and club doctors are understood to be very concerned about his situation. They have informed the Portuguese Football Federation of the injury and they, like his club, are now sweating on the outcome of the tests. The player himself has refused to debate the severity of his injury, saying: “The tests will prove definitive.” Simão, who has arguably been Benfica's star performer in recent seasons, will be desperately hoping that the injury is not severe, and he will be able to join the Portuguese squad in time for Germany. in favorites | email this page
