Portugal Captain Luis Figo Not to be Sanctioned By FIFA - Striker Will Play Against EnglandSubmitted by Pavlos Skoufis on Mon, 26/06/2006 - 12:41.
FIFA announced today that Inter's striker Luis Figo will not be sanctioned for a head-butt he did against Holland’s Mark van Bommel. The news relieves Portugal's coach Luis Felipe Scolari, as he has many headaches with players being suspended and more importantly Christiano Ronaldo's injury. Markus Siegler, the Director of Communications at FIFA told reporters that since the referee has already awarded a yellow card for the incident and that FIFA's Disciplinary Committee can not upgrade the yellow to a red, which means that Figo will not loose the World Cup Quarter-Finals match against England. "He was sanctioned immediately by the referee at the time. The referee's report came in last night and has been analysed by the relevant people but it is very unlikely anything will happen as he has been sanctioned already," Markus Siegler said in a press conference today. Siegler added that only if the referee hadn't awarded a yellow card for the incident, then FIFA's Disciplinary Committee would be able to make a decision on whether Luis Figo can be sanctioned or not. Luis Figo head-butted Mark van Bommel in a dispute they had while the referee was busy showing "yet another" yellow card. Although the referee did not see the incident, his linesman notified him and Figo got booked. Portugal play against England in a match which resembles the Euro 2004 tournament, when Scolari's team knocked England out of the tournament in a match decided by penalties. If Greece had qualified for the World Cup, we could have been witnessing very similar quarter finals and it is worth noting that the Portuguese fans were waiving a banner with "Where are you Greece?" written on it, during Portugal's opening match in the World Cup 2006 tournament. in favorites | email this page
