Poland & Liverpool's Jerzy Dudek May Look To Ronald Koeman's Benfica For First-Team Action To Assure Squad PlaceSubmitted by Scott Harkness on Fri, 02/12/2005 - 14:33.
Poland and Liverpool keeper Jerzy Dudek has voiced his intentions to leave Liverpool FC in search of first team action. Liverpool’s Champions League goalkeeping hero is worried that a lack of regular team play will affect his chances of being picked as the first-choice keeper in the Polish squad in next Summers World Cup finals. It seems that one of Liverpool's Istanbul heroes could leave Anfield in January, having not played first team football since the night in May, on which his goalkeeping heroics helped to take the Reds to Champions League glory. Dudek, who has been sat on the sidelines since Jose Reina's arrival, may have to seek a transfer away from Liverpool if he is not able to impress on the pitch before the World Cup this Summer, four and a half years after joining Liverpool from Feyenoord. He says in Polish newspaper Gazeta Wyborcza how manager Rafael Benitez informed him that Pepe Reina would remain first choice goalkeeper, barring injury or a dramatic dip in the Spain International's form. Dudek said, "I don't want to be counting on an injury to a colleague and that places me in a tough situation. I told him that situation does not interest me. I played most of Poland's matches in qualifying for the World Cup but if I don't play for my club I could wind up not going to the finals. For me that would be a disaster." Dudek has yet to make a first-team appearance for Liverpool this season, and has already lost his automatic place in the Poland team - that being taken by Celtic's Artur Boruc. There is interest from the Portuguese club Benfica, coached by Ronald Koeman, who have been linked with a January move for the 32-year-old. in favorites | email this page
