Poland 1-2 Colombia - Celtic's Boruc & West Brom's Kuszczak Make Blunders In Friendly

Poland suffered a disastrous defeat in their last home friendly before the World Cup, after a freak goal from goalkeeper Luis Enrique Martinez gave Colombia a 2-1 win in Chorzow, Poland on Tuesday.

The new strike partnership of Celtic's Maciej Zurawski and Borussia Dortmund's Ebi Smolarek proved ineffective and the Poles were limited to only a handful of opportunities, mainly shots from distance.

Colombia took the lead after 20 minutes when Elkin Murillo opened the scoring with a deflected free kick.

Luis Martinez’s amazing goal doubled the visitor’s lead after 63 minutes, and it wasn’t until 90 minutes that Ireneusz Jelen provided a glimmer of hope with a late consolation for the Poles.

The team were booed by their own supporters for much of a poor second-half and local journalists at the post-match news conference gave Czech Head Coach Karel Brückner a torrid time.

"It's not yet time to talk about a crisis because we are still at the preparation stage.

"This match was not a success and I do feel some concern,” continued the Czech boss.

"There were moments where we did not control the situation on the pitch and we did not carry out the tactics we had set ourselves," said Janas.

"In particular I was not satisfied with the defence. The players lack dynamism and pace, but we have another nine days until the finals and we will work on this in Germany.

"Both sides' goalkeepers allowed goals which could have been avoided. [Liverpool keeper] Jerzy Dudek also made mistakes and recovered from them.

"It is still open which keeper will be number one for the finals. Both are in good form." Janas continued.

West Bromwich Albion keeper Tomasz Kuszczak did himself no favours in attempting to secure a World Cup starting place when he allowed Martinez's long punt to bounce over his head and into the net in the 63rd minute.

Janas also criticised Celtic keeper Artur Boruc who was on for the first-half, and was at fault for Colombia's first goal.

This is certain to provide more ammunition for his critics, unhappy at his decision to omit Liverpool's Jerzy Dudek from his 23-man squad for Germany.
