Peru 2-2 Bolivia Copa America 2007 Group A Result: Chelsea Forward Pizarro Scores Twice To Qualify - DC United's Moreno OpensSubmitted by Scott Harkness on Wed, 04/07/2007 - 02:11.
Peru have drawn 2-2 against Bolivia in their final Copa América 2007 Group A match at the Estadio Metropolitano in Mérida on Tuesday, with the draw consigning Bolivia to an early-exit from the tournament and guaranteeing Peru a place in the knockout stages of the Copa América 2007, Venezuela. Bolivia took the lead in the 24th minute, with a long-range strike from outside the penalty area from Jaime Moreno, with Chelsea new-boy and Peru captain Claudio Pizarro levelling six minutes before half-time. Bolivia re-took the lead just before half-time and despite battling hard to try and keep their lead, the Peru skipper again levelled the scores in the 84th minute to take Peru into the last eight. Moreno, who is a forward with DC United in the MLS, picked up the ball outside of the Peru area, and seeing that the Peru keeper Leao Butrón was off his line, lobbed the ball perfectly over Butrón to open the scoring. Peru captain and Chelsea striker Claudio Pizarro levelled for Peru nine minutes later, but Bolivia - needing a win to be sure of continuing in the South American tournament - took the lead in the dying minute of the first-half, with Jhasmany Campos taking Bolivia into a 2-1 lead at half-time. The second-half saw Bolivia become negative in their approach to the game and squandered their lead with only 15 minutes to play when they gave away a free-kick in a dangerous area. Juan Carlos Mariño stepped-up to take the free-kick, which saw Pizarro questionably beat the Bolivian off-side trap to header in at close-range to virtually seal a place in the knockout stages. Bolivia are now out of Copa América 2007, having only scored 2 points in their three matches played.
