Paraguay's veteran captain announced his retirement from further World Cup tournaments today and issued a warning against England, Trinidad & Tobago and Sweden, Paraguay's Group B opponents, that Paraguay is currently in it's best form ever.

The 35 years-old Palmeiras defender said that this will be the third and last World Cup tournament in his career, paving the way for new talent to be promoted to the squad. He has already 105 caps with the Paraguayan national football team.

"This is my last World Cup and it will definitely be my best World Cup..."

"The team is the best we've ever had and we have the chance to go further than ever," Carlos Gamarra told reporters.

Paraguay had advanced to the knockout stages of the 1998 World Cup in France and of the 2002 World Cup in Korea and Japan, and definitely can not be considered as the underdogs.

Gamarra expressed his sadness of the fact that one of his teammates and best friends Jose Cardozo. Cardozo played for San Lorenzo in the Argentinian league this season, but missed most of the action due to injuries.
