Oleg Blokhin Apologises For Ukraine's Performance in the Opening Match Against SpainSubmitted by Pavlos Skoufis on Wed, 14/06/2006 - 18:29.
Ukraine's manager Oleg Blokhin apologised to the Ukrainian fans about the team's performance and heavily criticised his players, who gave a nice gift to Spain's coach Luis Aragones. "The players did not carry out the trainer's advice," Blockhin said in the press conference after the match. "Sometimes it looked as though they were not even trying to attack. They didn't seem to move, although the Spanish players were doing so with no problems." "Spain are a strong and technically excellent side but there were times when we looked like the worst team in Europe... I am being critical but this wasn't a friendly. I am not so much unhappy about the score but the way they didn't show enough guts on the pitch." "I apologise to all Ukraine fans and I hope this will never be repeated," Blokhin added. Ukraine's manager declined to comment on the unreasonable sending-off and penalty decision from the referee, saying that he leaves this to the organising committee to review. "All I saw was the players' feet but I have been told it should not have been a penalty. I don't comment on referee's decisions but if a referee has made a mistake then it is up to the FIFA committee to look at it." Spain's manager Luis Aragones appeared delighted with the result. "We have had good luck today. It doesn't often happen that you win your first match 4-0... The heat was a factor certainly but we did our bit too. We got our goals early and that probably affected Ukraine's morale more than the heat," he told reporters. in favorites | email this page
