Now Curbishley Is Tipped For England JobSubmitted by Neville Nixon on Wed, 14/09/2005 - 11:25.
English Premiership team Charlton Athletic FC's Alan Curbishley has had his name thrown into the hat for the England managers post. His club's Chief Executive Peter Varney says it would be no surprise to him if Alan Curbishley ended up as England manager in the near future. Curbishley has just clocked up 600 games in sole charge of the club, over a period spanning 10 years, but how would the Charlton Boss tackle the job? He is a totally different character from Bolton Wanderers' Sam Allardyce, the other domestic name linked with the post as England manager. They are both strict disciplinarian's, and have both served lengthy managerial apprenticeships. In many people's opinion Curbishley would probably be the man of choice for the English FA, because he has a better public image. "Big" Sam Allardyce's gruff nature and forthright speech would probably rattle too many of those in Soho square, whereas Curbishley comes across in a far more gentle fashion, although he also has underlying steel to his occasionally barbed comments. Charlton executive Varney, speaking to the local press had this to say, "I'm not surprised he's linked with the England job... It's a great reflection on him and Charlton, Alan is one of the best English coaches there is, but he has got a job to do here and I hope he finishes it". Varney said if and when Curbishley did eventually leave the club, he would leave a substantial legacy for his successor. "Alan has shown tremendous loyalty, because he has had chances to better himself,But he has stayed here, helped the club move forward, and created the best playing squad we have ever had. He finished, "We believe that history will record he is the greatest manager the club's ever had." in favorites | email this page
