Newcastle United received a body blow in their quest of putting up a strong side for their last-32 UEFA Cup clash with Zulte Waregem in Belgium, with their skipper Scott Parker being ruled out with a hamstring problem.

The 26-year-old London-born midfielder has had a scattered season so far, missing out with injuries and illness.

Meanwhile, Magpies’ loan-signing Oguchi Onyewu is ineligible to play having already played in Europe for Standard Liege.

Glenn Roeder will however look forward to former Manchester United midfielder Nicky Butt to recover in time from his toe problem while England international midfielder Kieron Dyer is also expected to be fit for the Bay Arena outing.

32-year-old Butt has claimed Newcastle can go on to win the UEFA Cup.

Butt said on Tuesday: "We have a great chance of winning the UEFA Cup this season.

"We have produced our best performances in the UEFA Cup this season. For some reason it has been suiting us - the games and the style of play. We have a good chance in the competition.

"Any cup is about winning games and we are capable of doing that if you look at the teams that are left in the competition."
