Mexico Beats Hungary by 2-0 in US International Friendlies TourSubmitted by Pavlos Skoufis on Thu, 15/12/2005 - 18:33.
With a goal in each half from Francisco Fonseca and Joel Huiqui, Mexico managed it's first win against a European side in 7 consecutive matches (under Ricardo La Volpe since he took over as national team's coach after the 2002 World Cup) last night at the Chase Field stadium, in Phoenix, United States. The first goal came 32 minutes into the game, when Juan Pablo Rodriguez' corner feeded Fonseca and he managed to score with a powerful header, jumping higher than the Hungarian defenders and leaving Hungary's goalkeeper Balazs Rabockzki watching the ball go into net near his right goalpost. The winning goal for Mexico came in 7 minutes after the second half kicked-off. Rodriquez took a free kick and Joel Huiqui deflected the ball with his left foot and sent it into the net. Hungary had to play the game with one man less, after Denes Rosa's hard tackle on a Mexican midfielder during a fight for possession. From the match statistics, Mexico had a clear upper hand in the game, with 14 shots on goal against Hungary's 3. However Hungary's German coach Lothar Matthaus appeared satisfied with his team's performance. Five Hungarian players made their debut appearance with the national squad. "We had great problems before the game with the long journey and the temperature but our young players did what they could against one of the best teams in the world," said Matthaus. Hungary are scheduled for another International Friendly game against Antigua and Barbuda on Sunday in Miami, Florida. in favorites | email this page
