Mexico 0-0 Chile: Copa America 2007 Group B: Chile & Mexico Qualify For Copa America Knockout Stages - Brazil Or Ecuador To JoinSubmitted by Scott Harkness on Thu, 05/07/2007 - 01:50.
Mexico have drawn 0-0 with Chile in their final Copa América 2007 Group B Match, with the result guaranteeing both teams a place in the knockout stages of the South American tournament. Chile, needing a draw to guarantee a place in the knockout stages, came out with intent in the first-half, almost taking the lead in the 18th minute after Rodrigo Tello took a free-kick at an acute angle to the goal, whipping it in goal-wards, with El Tri keeper Francisco Guillermo Ochoa dropping to save on the line, with appeals from Chile that the ball had crossed the line. With the El Tri having already qualified, Mexico head coach Hugo Sanchez made nine changes from the side that Ecuador Brazil 2-1, with the El Tri boss giving a chance to some of the lesser players, but none of the new players seemed to want to make an impression on the game. Chile were the only team to really carve any goalscoring opportunities, with Carlos Villanueva failing to capitalise on his chance after breaking through the Mexican defence and Manuel Iturra’s long-range shot flashing just wide of Ochoa’s right-post. The half finished 0-0, with Chile by far the team in control, but failing on their chances in the first-half. The second-half saw Mexico come out with far more intent, with Gonzalo Pineda and Jaime Arturo Lozano having shots on tearget for Mexico, with Cuauhtémoc Blanco coming close. Chile had chances of their own, with Villanueva and Humberto Suazo testing Ochoa in the Mexico goal, and Arturo Sanhueza and Manuel Iturra coming close. The game finished 0-0, with a happy result for both sides as they are now both guaranteed places in the knockout stages of the tournament.
