Manchester United Offer Trials To DC United Star Freddy Adu - Ferguson Hoping To Beat Chelsea To Signing

Manchester United FC are reported to have negotiated a two-week trial for DC United's Ghanaian-born teenage sensation Freddy Adu according to reports in the US yesterday.

The news that 17-year-old Adu is likely to have a trial with the Premiership leaders later this month surfaced in America yesterday.

However, Manchester United initially placed a statement on the club's official website insisting that there would be no move to bring Adu to Old Trafford.

But it now transpires that United are fully-intent on giving Adu a trial, with speculation that the initial statement released on Thursday morning had not represented the views of Sir Alex Ferguson who has always been an admirer.

Current Premiership champions Chelsea FC have also been linked with the talented teenager, whose Major League Soccer season has been brought to a premature end after DC United failed to qualify for the end of season play-offs.

Adu has played three seasons for DC United in the MLS, having joined them at the age of 14 and since DC United's domestic season has now ended, having been knocked out after they lost a play-off to New England Revolution at the weekend, talk of a transfer away from the US has begun.

A move to Europe for the Ghana-born star could go through as early as January, although a fee would have to be negotiated with MLS who, as with all US-based players, own Adu's player registration.

After the play-off against New England Revolution Adu said there had been “some serious talks,” hinting that his plan for next year is to make a name for himself on the European stage.

“I’d like to be back but my ultimate goal is to go overseas and if it comes sooner rather than later, I'll take it,” said Adu.

The United manager would like to be able to secure the services of Adu prior to the January transfer window, without it becoming a bidding war between themselves and Chelsea, whose manager Jose Mourinho is also known to be an admirer of the talented player.

Adu has decided to play international football for his adopted country, the USA, rather than his homeland of Ghana, who would dearly love to have Adu become a Black Star.
