Manchester United are close to securing a deal for Spain and Villarreal midfielder Marcos Senna according to recent reports in the Spanish media.

The 30-year-old Spain international, despite being Brazilian by birth, was chosen by Luis Aragones to join the Spanish squad for the 2006 FIFA World Cup Finals, and has been linked with a move to Old Trafford for much of the summer, but the deal appeared to have been ruled out when Manchester United pursued the signature of Spurs’ Michael Carrick.

The Tottenham Hotspur and England star is expected to complete his transfer to Old Trafford early next week, with United manager Sir Alex Ferguson looking to make some summer signings after the departure of Ruud van Nistelrooy to Real Madrid.

Carrick, a former West Ham United academy star, played well in his brief appearances in the holding role for England at the World Cup Finals, but the United boss is hoping to sure-up his midfield - which has been lacking it’s usual dominance since the departure of former captain Roy Keane – and is now aiming to bring in Senna, who has impressed many with his commanding role in midfield for Villarreal.

Senna recently said that he was honoured to be linked with a move to the Premiership giants, but was determined to commit his future to Villarreal.

However, recent reports have suggested that Ferguson has renewed his interest in the Furia Roja star, with United on the hunt for another top-class midfielder before the Premiership season starts for United on August 20.
