Man Utd Striker Saha Hoping For Place In France Squad Ahead Of Liverpool's Cisse & Fenerbahçe's AnelkaSubmitted by Scott Harkness on Thu, 20/04/2006 - 11:57.
Manchester United striker Louis Saha believes his recent run-of-form means has a good chance of making the French World Cup squad. The 27-year-old, who has scored twice in eight games for France, has enjoyed a successful run in United's first team this season after recovering from injury. The former Fulham forward has scored 14 goals in all competitions for Manchester United this season and has even been chosen ahead of Dutchman Ruud van Nistelrooy in the starting line-up recently. With less than a month until coach Raymond Domenech names his final 23-man squad for Germany, Saha has thrust himself into contention for a place in the Les Bleus squad for the Finals. “Things were not looking good for me at the start of the season but now I am back in the race, this is a miracle,” Saha told Le Parisien. “We are second in the league, we've won the League Cup and I've scored goals. Everything is fine for me.” Saha has not played an international since Les Bleus' 0-0 draw in a friendly with Poland in November 2004, but was called up for France’s last match, against Slovakia on March 1. Although Saha did not play, his domestic form makes him a serious challenger to Fenerbahçe’s Nicolas Anelka and Liverpool’s Djibril Cisse for the striking place up-front with Thierry Henry. “The fact I was selected in March shows the coach still trusts me,” added Saha. “It doesn’t mean that I will go to the World Cup, but I am a fighter and my game has improved a lot.” Les Bleus have upcoming friendlies against Mexico, Denmark and China before the World Cup Finals begin on June 9, with France's first match, against Switzerland, on June 13. France have been drawn in Group G in the World Cup Finals alongside Switzerland, Korea Republic and Togo. in favorites | email this page
