Magpies Midfielder Scott Parker Must Be In Sven's World Cup Squad Says Newcastle Caretaker Boss Glen RoederSubmitted by Scott Harkness on Sun, 19/02/2006 - 21:21.
Newcastle United caretaker boss and former West Ham manager Glen Roeder is certain that England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson must take Newcastle midfielder Scott Parker to the World Cup Finals in Germany. During his stint as Newcastle United's caretaker boss, Glenn Roeder insists that on his current form the midfielder should go to Germany with the England squad this summer, and Roeder sees Parker as the perfect midfield foil for Liverpool’s Steven Gerrard and Chelsea’s Frank Lampard. “Now I am really getting to know Scott Parker, I am sure the World Cup will be his goal,” said Roeder. “That's what he'll be reaching for, and he should be, there's no doubt about it. “If he stays fit between now and the end of the season, and carries on playing like he has done these last three games, he might just force the manager's hand. “The manager (Eriksson) has said there aren't many places available and has shown a great loyalty to the players in his squad in his time as England manager," said the Magpies caretaker boss. “But I think he's said there are two or three places, and Scott has got to believe he can force his way into one of those - exactly the same as Kieron Dyer should.” Roeder is convinced that 25 year-old Parker can provide the answer to the problem of how to get the best out of Stephen Gerrard and Frank Lampard - by being their midfield anchorman. “Scotty would not look out of place at all in that company,” he added. “In the role that he plays, he's as good as anybody.” Roeder also feels that Parker would be the perfect squad member amid the long haul of an international tournament. Parkers professionalism both on and off the pitch is where the Newcastle midfielder could make his mark during a month in Germany, according to the Newcastle caretaker boss. “I’ve heard Eriksson say this as well, but it's important to have players that can stand being away from home that long. Players that don't get bored, don't get homesick and don't start getting into a frame of mind that affects their play. “Scotty Parker is one of those players that you could take anywhere for four weeks and he's that professional that he can easily handle it. “The manager knows he can go to bed safely at night not worrying about if Scott is fretting about home.” The fanatical Newcastle supporters share Roeder's regard for Parker, with the temporary manager seeing the relationship between player and Geordie fans as a match made in heaven. “Newcastle United is the club for Scotty Parker. I know he's loving it here. The fans have taken to him, and rightly so. But I think he's come up here to prove a few points. “If there are any doubters, this is the club where he will put them all to bed.” in favorites | email this page
